The original Chinese version of this collection was composed in the forms of the classical<br>metrical patterns, utilizing 46 of them. The author, a native of Xi'an, China, began writing poetry<br>while pursuing doctoral studies in the United States. Employing traditional Chinese poetic forms<br>to depict modern experiences in a foreign setting (such as the life of a graduate student), the<br>author strives to capture that ineffable quality in the ancient stanzas, as well as judiciously<br>incorporating imagery advocated in the modern era. His teaching career in Xi'an and Taiwan is<br>also vividly reflected in some poems. In translating the works into English, the author strives to<br>faithfully convey the syntactic structures and rhythmic characteristics of the originals, which<br>leads to a summary of theoretical nature. While English-speaking readers may not be able to<br>fully appreciate the original metrical nuances, they are still able to engage with the Oriental<br>imagery and philosophical insights presented, or to explore the alluded cultural atmosphere<br>and historical landmarks of the author's hometown, Xi'an.
